About My Hair Secret

My Hair Secret was founded in Lancashire, England by Scientist, Emma Procter. After experiencing problems with her own hair, Emma began researching products and ingredients to find a solution for her problem.

Emma also suffers from a condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which contributed to her hair problem and she found that there was more and more hair coming out when washing and brushing each day. Emma says, "It is a disturbing thing to see your hair thinning, I understand myself how this knocks your confidence. You are trying to carry on as normal, working, socialising, enjoying family time, but you are always self-conscious about your hair. As a consultant, I have encountered people with a variety of hair issues and it is amazing and concerning to see the lengths that some people go to to hide their hair problems before they come for help."

Emma needed to find a solution that was also Dairy free as she also suffers from digestive issues. After researching various solutions to hair loss and working in a Hair clinic as a consultant, Emma found that many other people were looking for a similar solution. She found that many offerings on the market were not suitable for Vegans or those with dietary issues such as dairy and wheat intolerance. Many products contain collagen sourced from Marine animals such as Sharks or other animal derived ingredients. This really upset Emma and she vowed that "My Hair Secret" would never use ANY animal derived ingredients in their products. Our founder decided to make a unique product that was suitable for everyone, ethical and that was drug free but still effective in maintaining healthy hair growth.

During her research, Emma found a possible link between a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and hair loss. A sensitivity to this hormone may cause miniaturisation of the hair follicles. She found that sensitivity is hereditary and may increase as we age. This finding was the catalyst for creating the unique blend "Lustalox", a blend which includes ingredients that have been reported to inhibit the formation of Dihydrotestosterone. Emma Procters' research found that other, drug containing treatments that addressed this issue generally came with some really nasty side effects or were only suitable for men. "As an animal lover, I could not rest easy knowing that any product I made had to use an animal in some way for the sake of beauty. In my mind, this is totally unacceptable. After researching the fantastic ingredients that you can source from plants and other natural substances, there is absolutely no need to include animal derived ingredients in any beauty product. It is important for Scientists like myself to ensure that we are aware of these alternative ingredients and by using them in conjunction with each other and in the correct amounts, there is no need to compromise on effectiveness or quality at all.

It was this revelation that motivated me to vow to make the “My Hair Secret “ products Vegan, Cruelty free, Drug free, Dairy + Gluten Free and a brand that can be trusted by all.

After being diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) in 2012 my condition has gradually worsened and I had to give up my career as a teacher. This was a very difficult time for me and my family. I felt that I could not have a career and that everything I had learned was going to go to waste.

My Hair Secret has given me a new lease of life! I am thankful for having the opportunities that I have had to pursue my love of Science and pleased that I can use my knowledge now to help others feel more confident in themselves as self confidence is so important! There is no cure for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome yet but there is great support out there and I am now trying to raise awareness of the condition and I am also looking at ways to help Marine conservation charities."
